Theory of Mott insulators

Reviewed is a conceptual picture of Mott insulators, based on strong spin-orbital polarization in unrestricted Hartree-Fock theory with screened intra-atomic parameters. This picture is used to interpret recent work. Implications for the shortcomings of local-density band theory are discussed.
