Presulfiding coal liquid hydrodesulfurization catalysts

This paper is concerned with the pretreatment of catalysts for hydrodesulfurization of coal-derived liquids - specifically presulfiding of cobalt-molybdate alumina catalysts - which appears to be a useful procedure for raising both the initial and the subsequent catalyst activity levels. General remarks on coal liquefaction and hydrodesulfurization of liquid fuel by means of catalysts are followed by a description of results of an experimental program in which sulfur-pretreated cobalt-molybdate alumina catalysts were tested for hydrodesulfurizing raw anthracene oil and COED (FMC process) oil. It is shown that the total amount of H/sub 2/ supplied during catalyst presulfiding has an effect on the catalyst activity. Relatively less amount (below stoichiometric quantities) of H/sub 2/ supplied results in lower activity of the catalyst. Treatment of the sulfided catalyst with pure H/sub 2/ results in decreased activity of the catalyst. 11 references.
