New method for producing cryogenic laser fusion targets

Journal Article · · Adv. Cryog. Eng.; (United States)
The method developed in this research for producing the desired cryogenic targets is termed fast isothermal freezing (FIF) and reproducibly forms transparent, solid DT layers of excellent thickness uniformity on the inner surface of GMB fuel cores. The FIF method relies on a static heat-exchange gas for rapid target cooling after the target has been heated by a focused laser beam to a temperature at which the fuel is gaseous. The procedure used in the FIF method is simple, fast, allows continuous observation of the freezing process, and is readily adaptable to experimental fusion target chambers.
