Synoptic-dynamic meteorology in midlatitudes. Volume II. Observations and theory of weather systems

Book ·
OSTI ID:6227041
This book uses extensive figures and mathematical equations to present the concepts important to weather systems in midlatitudes. Extensive references and problem sets are included for each of the three major sections. Section 1, The Behavior of Synoptic-Scale Extratropical Systems, includes the following sub-headings: the formation of surface pressure systems; the movement of surface movement of upper-level troughs and ridges; instability, cyclogenesis, and anticyclogenesis; the classical midlatitude (1) balance equations, (2) generalized height-tendency equation, and (3) isentropic potential vorticity thinking. Section 2, Fronts and Jets, includes the following sub-headings: the relationship between fronts and jets; consequences of the cross-front scale; kinematics and thermodynamics of frontogenesis; observational aspects of fronts; dynamics of surface frontogenesis; dynamics of middle-upper tropospheric frontogenesis; observation aspects of jets and jet streaks; dynamics of jets and jet streaks. Section 3, Precipitation systems in the midlatitudes, includes the following sections: types of precipitation; classification of precipitation systems; convective systems; nonconvective systems.
