Study on the epidemiology of asthma in children in Philadelphia

Journal Article · · J. Allergy; (United States)
A study of patients visiting a children's hospital from July, 1963 to May, 1965 was conducted. There were 1346 patients (2.5/day) seen during this period and 70 days when at least 5 patients (5 to 14) were seen. Statistically significant relation was found between days with increased asthma and days with high barometric pressure (> 1020 mb) or with high air pollution (> highest 1/10 of scores for 2-year period). There was a 4-fold greater asthma incidence for the former case and a 3-fold greater incidence for the latter. Only 3% of days with neither adverse condition had a high incidence of asthma. Nine-fold increase in incidence was noted when two factors coincided. Weather and air pollution monitoring stations were within 3 miles of hospital. Children generally came from within 5 miles.
