The products of the reduction of laminar graphite compounds (LGC) with metal chlorides may be used as catalysts for organic reactions, the synthesis of ammonia, and graphite-diamond conversion. However, the use of standard reducing agents (alkali metals and their solutions in liquid ammonia, aromatic radical-anions, hydrogen at low pressure (1-2 bar), and lithium aluminum hydride) is accompanied by the formation of mixtures containing a number of impurity phases in addition to the incorporated metal, which markedly complicates the interpretation of the results obtained. In the present work, the authors studied the reduction of LGC with ferric chloride by hydrogen at high pressure and the physicochemical properties of the reduction products.
