Preparation and superconducting properties of ultrathin YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/minus//ital x// films

Ultrathin films of YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/minus//ital x// with thicknesses down to 2 nmwere grown on(100)SrTiO/sub 3/ and (100)MgO by inverted cylindrical magnetronsputtering. Metallic behavior and zero resistance temperatures above 4.2 K wereobtained in 3-nm-thick films on SrTiO/sub 3./ Thinner films revealedtemperature-activated conductivity and only partial transitions tosuperconductivity due to inhomogeneities in the film morphology. On MgO, thecritical film thickness leading to deteriorations of the transport propertieswas 6 nm. An analysis of the fluctuation-enhanced conductivity near/ital T//sub /ital c// in terms of the Aslamazov--Larkin theory (Phys. Lett. A/bold 26/, 238 (1968)) revealed three-dimensional behavior even in the thinnestfully superconducting films.
