Dissipation of long magnetoacoustic waves through interaction with cosmic rays

Journal Article · · Sov. Astron. Lett. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:6225744
The damping of magnetoacoustic waves by cosmic-ray diffusion will predominate in the interstellar medium for wavelengths lambda> or =1 pc (or, in hot material with Troughly-equal10/sup 6/ /sup 0/K and nroughly-equal3 x 10/sup -3/ cm/sup -3/, for lambda> or approx. =100 pc). The dissipated wave energy will contribute to accelerating the cosmic rays.
