Development of high field superconducting magnet using in-situ V3Ga compound tape

Conference · · IEEE Trans. Magn.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6225291
The newly developed in-situ V3Ga compound tape was wound into a pancake coil and its coil characteristics were investigated. The V3Ga tape, containing many fine filaments with a diameter of about 0.1 ..mu..m, is 0.185 mm in thickness and 5 mm in width, and the surface of the tape was covered with electroplated copper for stabilization. The coil consists of 14 double pancake molecules and has a bore diameter of 50 mm. The coil was tested in a Nb-Ti bias field magnet having a bore diameter of 145 mm, and generated a magnetic field of 14.4 Tesla at a coil current of 190 A and in a bias field of 9.9 Tesla. The other characteristics such as sweep rate dependences, flux jump phenomena, hysteresis and remanent field, were also investigated.
