In a brief review, the problem of indoor exposure to passive tobacco smoke, radon decay products, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, formaldehyde, asbestos fibers, aeroallergens and certain microorganisms is discussed. Scientific and technical staff from 15 agencies have formed an interagency committee to discuss current air quality regulations, research needs and opportunities for collaboration. Studies by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Gas Research Institute and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are reported. These include pollution monitoring, effects of increased use of kerosenes and wood-burning stoves, spatial distribution of pollutant concentrations in residential environments and human exposures to these pollutants.
