Los Angeles converts LFG into vehicle fuel

The Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts are processing landfill gas into compressed natural gas to fuel several vehicles at the Puente Hills landfill. A number of different vehicles will participate in the program, including two refuse collection trucks with retrofitted engines, a pickup truck, a water truck, and a transfer rig. The districts will evaluate how the vehicles' engines perform on the natural gas. They have also invited engine manufacturers to participate in the program to help develop new engines for burning natural gas. Before delivering the gas to the fueling station, the districts filter it to remove moisture and carbon dioxide. The processed gas carries the same Btu rating as natural gas.
