The Measurement Chi-Square (X[sup 2]/M) approach was developed by the authors as a general method to implement the use of various nuclear dual-gauge principles for minimizing measurement interferences. The primary impetus for this was the minimization of the effect of variable alloy composition on the continuous, on-line measurement of aluminum sheet thickness with combined transmission and backscatter X-ray gauges. (Another approach to this problem is to use an on-line energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence analyzer in conjunction with an X-ray transmission gauge.)
