Experimental measurement of heat flux to large and small calorimeters in an engulfing pool fire

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6224560
An experimental study is currently underway to assess the repeatability of the total heat input to a test model fully engulfed in a pool fire. Pursuant to that effort, a preliminary experiment was conducted which involved thermally massive and nonmassive objects engulfed in a JP-4 pool fire. Heat fluxes to the objects are calculated using temperature measurements and a one-dimensional inverse heat conducted model. Lower fluxes to the thermally massive and physically large object suggest a strong coupling between the object and its local fire environment. This paper discusses in detail the experiment and analysis, plus in brief, possible explanation and ramifications of the results.
