Dow Chemical Company's coal gasification research and development effort included construction of a 36 tpd pilot plant in 1979 and a 1600 tpd proto plant in 1982. The 2400 tpd Dow Syngas Project is the first commercial scale demonstration of that technology. The project will utilize Dow's coal gasification technology to convert Western sub-bituminous coal, or other suitable coal, including lignite, into medium BTU synthetic gas. The synthetic gas will be purchased by Dow and will be utilized as fuel in combined cycle gas turbines cogenerating electricity and steam. The process, hot gas cleanup, and the combined cycle plant are briefly described. 1 figure, 1 table.
