Properties of a modified type 329 weldable and SCC (stress corrosion cracking) resistant stainless steel

A new 44LN ferritic-austenitic steel has been developed which contains less carbon and more nickel and nitrogen than 329 steels and is 50-60% austenitic. Its ductile-to-brittle transition was more gradual than that of 329 steel. Its 475/sup 0/C embrittlement was delayed compared with 329 steel, but it was more sensitive to sigma-phase embrittlement. In tests for resistance to general and oxidizing corrosion, pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, intergranular corrosion, and sulfide stress corrosion cracking, the 44LN had similar resistance as 329L and 316L steels towards acetic, formic, and dilute sulfuric acids, boiling nitric acid, and boiling MgCl/sub 2//U-bend, and better resistance in > 95% sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, nitric acid plus anions, ferric chloride, sea water, CaCl/sub 2//stress, and sulfide. In extensive tests of welding and corrosion resistance of welds, the 44LN performed better than 329L and A669 steels. Among typical applications are: tube sheets, baffle plates, shells, and heads of heat exchangers in which ferritic stainless steels are used as tube material; coolers/condensers for the reaction products after ammonia oxidation in nitric acid plants; and transport and processing of sour gases and oils in the petroleum industry.
