The productive accomplishments of the United States can be attributed to a multiplicity of diverse industries, great technological capability and modern capital equipment. Basic to every industry is the dependence on thermal energy or the heat that causes metallurgical and physical changes to metals and other products. It is this heat that allows a product or material to be bent, forged, extruded, rolled, hardened, softened or otherwise changed in some manner. Industrial furnaces and ovens, in which thermal energy is released, represent one of the fundamental units of heat processing equipment. Heat processing equipment varies widely according to the industry and may involve any number of designs and systems.
