Electron spin echo modulation and electron spin resonance studies of cupric ions in H-ZSM-5, Na-ZSM-5, K-ZSM-5, and Ca-ZSM-5 zeolites: analysis of /sup 13/C electron spin echo modulation

The interaction of Cu/sup 2 +/ with deuteriated and /sup 13/C-labeled adsorbates in ZSM-5 zeolites was examined by electron spin resonance and electron spin echo modulation spectroscopies. Cu/sup 2 +/ is found to form complexes with six molecules of water and four molecules of ammonia in each of the zeolites studied. However, the ability of Cu/sup 2 +/ to complex with either methanol or ethanol depends upon the cocation. When the cocation is Na/sup +/, K/sup +/, or Ca/sup 2 +/, cupric ion coordinates to three molecules of CH/sub 3/OH or C/sub 2/H/sub 5/OH, but it coordinates to four alcohol molecules in H-ZSM-5. These results suggest that there is a steric effect associated with the larger cations that inhibits the formation of larger alcohol complexes.
