Plant damage in Connecticut is likely to occur whenever the ambient ozone reaches or exceeds 5 pphM for 1 h or more as recorded on a Mast or Welsbach ozonemeter. During the growing seasons of 1963-1967, 355 days were monitored. Of these, there were 83 polluted days, or 1 polluted day for every 4 days monitored. Of the 317 hours of high-ozone recorded, 80% occurred in the afternoon. The daily maximum never occurred before noon. Most periods of high-ozone lasted 1 to 6 h, with a few lasting 7 to 9 h. The high-ozone periods usually occurred when the wind was from the southwest quadrant. There was no indication that pollution by ambient ozone became progressively more severe during the period 1963-1967. The ambient ozone in Connecticut reached a record high on June 6, 1968, when the ozonemeter in New Haven registered 19.5 pphM. On that date that State was covered by a slow-moving, warm air mass which had approached from the southwest. 2 references, 3 figures, 3 tables.
