The active 12,000-ft development in the sprawling Wilburton Gas Field in Latimer County, Okla. is fast developing into what will be the largest gas field in the Arkoma Basin of SE. Oklahoma. Already 36 completed high- pressure gas wells drilled on 640-acre spacing have proved a reserve in excess of 750 billion cu ft. The field probably will cover more than twice this reserve due to the series of extensions in many directions which indicate an ultimate proved reserve of 1,600 billion cu ft. Currently, 9 heavy-duty rigs are active in the development program which extends in every direction from Wilburton townsite, situated in the heart of the field. Straight- hole drilling difficulties present the major problem in the Wilburton Gas Field. This problem is complicated by extensive sloughing of the Pennsylvanian shales and the existence of a series of complex strike and cross-faults throughout the entire Atoka series. Contractors use conventional drilling mud until the intermediate casing string is set, using jel additive to assist in carrying out of cuttings. After the intermediate string is set at around 2,000 ft, a changeover is made to gas, if available, which is used to drill to within 400 ft of the basal Atoka (Spiro) sand.
