To assess the role of energy in stimulating productivity growth, an econometric model of sectoral productivity growth for individual industrial sectors in the US is used. Inputs are divided in each sector among capital, labor, electricity, nonelectrical energy, and materials in order to assess the significance of changing forms of energy. The model encompasses substitution among productive inputs in response to changes in relative prices as well as the growth of sectoral productivity as a function of relative prices. 27 references, 2 tables.
