Methanation process

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6216969
Foster Wheeler Energy Corp.'s new methanation process offers improved heat and mass transfer, reduced pressure offers improved heat and mass transfer, reduced pressure drop through the methanation reactor, lower catalyst requirements, and longer periods of catalyst usage without deactivation, coking, or plugging. The process entails feeding hydrogen and carbon monoxide into one or more tubular reactors containing a helical, nickel-based catalyst. The catalyst defines a spiral-shaped path for the movement of the gas. The exterior of the reactor tube, and possibly the center of the turbulator catalyst, are cooled by flowing water to remove the heat of reaction.
