A new family of niobium bronzes of formula Na /sub 1-x/ Sr /sub x/ NbO/sub 3/ : synthesis and X-ray characterization

The preparation of the niobium bronzes of formula Na /sub 1-x/ Sr /sub x/ NbO/sub 3/ has been carried out in sealed nickel tubes at 1300/sup 0/C. Four phases, whose structures are closely related to that of perovskite, have been characterized as x increases : an orthorhombic phase derived from NaNbO/sub 3/ (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.02), a monoclinic phase (0.03 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.06), a phase of rhombohedral symmetry (0.07 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.10) and, finally, a tetragonal phase (0.15 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.60).
