The production of natural gas and petroleum in E. Canada during 1971 was 16,410,852 Mcf of gas and 967,898 bbl of oil. This represents a decrease of 433,648 Mcf (2%) of gas and a decrease of 89,945 bbl (8%) of oil from the previous year. In the Hudson Bay region, industry and various government agencies completed 10-1/4 crew-months of combined geologic and geophysical work. Three shallow stratigraphic tests were drilled on land in the James Bay area of Ontario. In the Foxe Basin area of the E. Arctic, a 1,745 ft stratigraphic test was completed on Rowley Is. In SW. Ontario, 63 exploratory tests and 66 development wells were completed during 1971, a decrease of 7 exploratory and 32 development wells from the previous year. A rapid decline in Silurian development drilling, both on shore and in Lake Erie resulted in a 19% decrease in total footage drilled in 1971. Of the 7 significant Silurian gas discoveries, 3 were in Lake Erie. The overall exploratory success increased by 5 new wells drilled in West Virginia during 1971 compared with 1970. Total exploratory drilling also regited by Prof. J.A. Czubek from Institute of Nuclear Physics in Cracow.
