High-angular-momentum transfer during the autoionization of the 6[ital p][sub 1/2][ital nd] [ital J]=3 states of barium

We report a measurement of the energy dependence of the branching ratios for autoionization of the (6[ital p][sub 1/2][ital nd5/2])[sub [ital J]=[ital M][ital J]]=3 states of barium into the 5[ital d][sub 3/2][epsilon][ital l] continuum channels by monitoring the population in each [ital m][sub [ital j]] state of the 5[ital d][sub 3/2] residual ion. We use polarization-sensitive laser-induced fluorescence to detect the ion populations. Near the energy of the (6[ital p][sub 1/2][ital ng7/2])[sub [ital J]=3] perturbing resonances, nearly 25% of the doubly excited barium atoms produce the 5[ital d][sub 3/2][epsilon][ital h][sub 9/2] channel, requiring an exchange of at least three units of orbital angular momentum between the excited electrons.
