Effects of air pollutants in the Los Angeles basin on citrus

Experiments were performed to determine the effects of air pollutants, especially photochemical oxidants and fluorides on lemon and orange trees. The most important economic question was the effect of the various treatments on yield of fruit. The effects of photochemical oxidants on fruit yeild are partcularly serious in an area where exhaust gases accumulate and are activated by ultra violet energy in the sunlight. The reduced fruiting seems to be a cumulative response in which the reduced water used and photosynthesis plus increased leaf drop all combine to given a somewhat impoverished tree which is unable to produce as much fruit as it would in a more beneficial environment.
