US Coast Guard oil pollution control programs

Each year over a million tons of crude oil leaks from tankers and ships, while half as much again is deliberately dumped into the sea. This says nothing about 100,000 tons seeping out of offshore wells. There are many ways of reducing maritime pollution and the Coast Guard is continually exploring new ones. Response, for example, is an approach that offers research and development scientists and engineers a worthwhile challenge. Response means the ability either to forestall an accidental oil spill, or to localize and clean it up. The Coast Guard's most promising Response equipment to date is ADAPTS (Air Delivered Anti-Pollution Transfer System). The development of this system through a rigorous series of tests produced a practical and reliable method of forestalling a massive oil spill from a damaged tanker. The system removes oil from a distressed tanker before it has the opportunity to spill into the sea.
