Discrepancy between theory and experiment in nuclear polarization corrections of muonic /sup 208/Pb

Experimental nuclear-polarization corrections for muonic /sup 208/Pb have been deduced from a model-independent analysis of elastic electron-scattering and muonic x-ray data. The result is in disagreement with theoretical calculations and suggests the existence of a fundamental problem in present theoretical approaches to the nuclear polarization effect.
