An earlier paper showed that dezincification of [alpha]-brass could be monitored electrochemically by simulating the solution that would develop in an anodically polarized cavity and then carrying out a test in this solution at zero volts vs a copper reference electrode. A prediction made from the earlier work was that anodically polarized crevices would have similar characteristics to the simulated crevice solutions and could be used as an alternative electrochemical test for dealloying. This short note describes a series of tests that fulfill this prediction. The test has been developed using [alpha]-brass, but the same concept is applicable to engineering alloys such as aluminum bronzes (dezincification is a rare problem nowadays).
