Production of muon pairs in. pi. /sup -/N interactions at momenta 27 and 40 GeV/c

The inclusive production of muon pairs ..pi../sup -/+(Cu nucleus) ..--> mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/+... has been identified in the region of the continuum (1.3< or =M/sub ..mu../+/sub ..mu../-< or =2.5 GeV/c/sup 2/) at momenta p/sub (/=27 and 40 GeV/c. Values of the cross sections and the shape of the distributions in the kinematic variables X/sub F/ and p/sub T/ have been obtained. Attention is called to the weak dependence of the cross section dsigma/dX/sub F/ on X/sub F/. The average value of the transverse momentum

increases with increasing mass of the muon pair, and for fixed mass it increases with increase of the primary energy. The dependence of the muon pair production cross sections on the mass and primary energy are consistent with Drell-Yan scaling, and the cross section agrees in order of magnitude with the theoretical estimates.
