Characteristics of the first stage of constructing the Hoabinh Dam in Vietnam
As a result of an analysis of the data, investigations, and on-site observations at the Hoa-Binh Dam, Vietnam, the authors conclude: infilling of the rock mass with sand, successful for the Aswan dam, cannot be mechanically transferred to other dams; the possibility of using the energy of the river flow for removing low-quality soils in large amounts from the foundation of rock-fill dams by regulating the sequence of dumping the elements of the dam was confirmed in model investigations and successfully accomplished in the construction of the HoaBinh dam; at the site of the Hoa-Binh dam, observations of the dumping of the sand-gravel soil into water into a high shoulder did not reveal segregation of this soil, however, the data from investigations in a single borehole contradict the observations -- further on-site observation must therefore be made.
