The high-energy asymptotic behavior of the oscillator-strength distribution of nonrelativistic N-electron atoms and molecules is examined. A derivation is presented which leads to the coefficients of the first two asymptotic terms of the oscillator-strength density in terms of expectation values of the wave function. Furthermore, it is shown that truncating the contribution of these first two terms beyond some cutoff energy leads to a sum rule for the third moment of the resulting modified distribution. Numerical calculations have been performed on atomic hydrogen which illustrate the sum rule for the third moment of the modified distribution.
