Disproportionation of toluene over a HY/. beta. -AlF/sub 3//Cu catalyst--2. Kinetics

Kinetics were determined for the previously described catalyst at 400/sup 0/-500/sup 0/C, 2.0-11.0 atm total pressure, and with hydrogen diluent to minimize catalyst deactivation. A correction for the loss of activity was applied. At low hydrogen pressure, the toluene disproportionation rate decreased rapidly with increasing hydrogen partial pressure, but the rate became independent of hydrogen pressure at high hydrogen pressure. The apparent activation energy increased from 19.0 to 25.3 kcal/mole as the total pressure increased from 2 to 9 atm at constant hydrogen-toluene ratio. These results indicated that hydrogen inhibits the disproportionation; addition of various products showed that m-xylene also retarded the conversion, but benzene did not. The results were consistent with three Hougen-Watson reaction rate models, which assumed either molecular toluene adsorption or formation of an activated species from toluene as rate-limiting step and either molecular or dissociative hydrogen adsorption.
