A 9000 MWe (net) pool-type LMFBR plant has been developed, to approximately the same level as current US loop-type LMFBR plant designs, in a conceptual design study sponsored by EPRI. A major guideline specified the plant to have an 875/sup 0/F reactor outlet temperature and 550/sup 0/F, 1000 psi steam with the design effort concentrating on areas of the plant unique or especially important to the pool concept. These areas include the reactor deck; the reactor assembly and its internal structures, the thermal behavior of the plant during steady state and transients; the auxiliary heat transport systems; the primary sodium pumps; the intermediate heat exchangers; the plant seismic response; maintenance and inspection; and the Balance of Plant. The main conclusion arising from this work is that the large pool-type LMFBR is a viable concept suitable for use in the United States.
