This study seeks, through a variety of temperature-dependent tests on widely used austenitic, ferritic and martensitic steels and on an analysis of the chemical composition of various steel grades, to calculate standards for such materials factors as allowable stresses in welded structures. Among the conclusions are that low-temperature strengthening of metal may be used in the design of welded cryogenic structures; that it is necesary to know the temperature dependence of the metal properties when the stress concentrators, such as notches or reinforcements in weldments, are present; that steels with metastable structure decrease the strength of weldments; that manufacturers should guarantee the minimum yield and ultimate strengths of their materials at cryogenic temperatures; and that increases in the level of allowed stress in welded low-temperature steels must be attained by increasing their yield strength.
