A linear output, hydrostatic, hydraulic transmission is described, comprising: fluid driven, drive piston means, each means having a first side and a second side, each drive piston means being housed in a separate drive cylinder means. Each drive piston means may receive a continuous flow of pressurized drive fluid to displace the drive piston means within the drive cylinder means. A rotary driven, pressure intensification source supplies the continuous flow of pressurized drive fluid. The drive piston means transmitting an output drive motion characterized in that during operation an expansionary fluid circuit entrapping a second pressured fluid within the drive cylinder means on a first side of the drive piston means; means to continually add the second pressured fluid to the expansionary fluid circuit for causing an expansion; a closed hydraulic fluid loop connecting the drive cylinder means proximate the second side of the drive piston means, the control valve means, and the fluid pressure intensification source; means to add and remove pressurized drive fluid to the closed hydraulic fluid loop; means to circulate the pressurized drive fluid through the closed hydraulic fluid loop to cool the pressurized drive fluid; and wherein the expansionary fluid circuit is fluidly connected with the lower pressure portion of the closed hydraulic fluid loop.
