Measurements have been made of /sup 16/O, /sup 40/Ca(..cap alpha..,..cap alpha..x) reactions (x = p,d,t,/sup 3/He,..cap alpha..) at E/sub ..cap alpha../ = 139.2 MeV, /sup 16/O, /sup 40/Ca(p,px) reactions (x = p,d,t only) at E/sub p/ = 101.3 MeV, and /sup 40/Ca(p,px) reactions (x = p,d,t only) at E/sub p/ = 76.1 MeV, using the University of Maryland Sectored Isochronous Cyclotron. The energy sharing distributions (cross section vs. the energy of the outgoing projectile) obtained for the dominant hole states were found to be in good agreement with DWIA calculations. In these calculations the relevant two-body t-matrix is assumed to vary slowly with momenta and is taken out of the distorted wave integral. This factorization approximation is expected to work at high incident energy where the spread of momenta is small due to less distortion. For the (p,2p) reactions, the factorization approximation is found to be valid at both 76.1 and 101.3 MeV. The (..cap alpha..,..cap alpha..p) and (p,2p) reactions which sample different radial regions of the nucleus have been compared. The (..cap alpha..,..cap alpha..p) reactions yield spectroscopic factors 2 to 3 times larger than the (p,2p) reactions. The sensitivity of the spectroscopic factors to bound state, distorting parameters and the choice of two-body cross sections have been investigated but none of these ingredients resolve the above discrepancy. For the d,t and /sup 3/He knockout, the spectroscopic factors obtained from the proton induced reactions are in reasonable agreement with the theoretical results, but the alpha induced reactions yield spectroscopic factors 30 to 45 times larger compared to the theoretical values. Implications of this results are discussed.
