Oscillatory internal friction associated with hydride precipitation in. cap alpha. -titanium

Journal Article · · Scr. Metall.; (United States)
A new phenomenon, oscillatory IF in free decay, has been demonstrated experimentally. It is associated with the precipitation of hydrides in ..cap alpha..-titanium. A tentative model, involving the processes of longitudinal core redistribution of pinning points and dislocation unpinning, coupled through their mutual dependence on dislocation segment lengths, is offered to explain the oscillatory IF. A marked amplitude dependence of the IF in the temperature range of the precipitation peak in ..cap alpha..-titanium, containing 10 to 65 ..mu..g/g of hydrogen, has been demonstrated. The results indicate that more intensive studies of strain-amplitude-dependent and time-dependent effects of the type reported here, extended to a variety of metal-hydrogen systems, will help clarify the nature of the so-called precipitation peaks.
