Compressed-air energy-storage technology: program overview

Energy storage is a key element in the electric utility industry strategy for shifting energy consumption from oil to coal, nuclear and renewable energy sources. The US Department of Energy (DOE) Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) Technology Program is directed at developing a new technology designed to reduce the consumption of oil in the generation of electric power. The program has two major elements: Reservoir Stability Studies and Second-Generation Concepts Studies. The Reservoir Stability Studies are aimed at developing stability criteria for long-term operation of large underground reservoirs used for compressed air storage. The Second-Generation Concepts Studies are aimed at developing new concepts that will require little or no petroleum fuels for operation. In this overview, the program efforts during FY-1981 are outlined and major accomplishments towards the objectives of the program are identified.
