Demonstration of an integrated fluidized bed combustor and oil shale retort system
The economic viability of New Brunswick Albert Mines shales is substantially improved if it is co-utilized with high sulfur coal, such that, the energy from the oil shale is recovered as liquid fuels and the spent shale's sulfur fixing capability is fully utilized for controlling sulfur emissions from coal burning. The integrated fluidized bed coal combustor and oil shale retort system currently under development at the Research and Productivity Council, offers such a potential. The current status of the project are discussed and the experimental findings on the retorting characteristics of N.B. shales and fluidized bed combustion of spent shale and high sulfur New Brunswick coal are discussed.
