Mechanisms of the dismutation of superoxide catalyzed by Cu(II)-phenanthroline complex and of the oxidation of Cu(I)-phenanthroline complex by oxygen in aqueous solution. Progress report, July 1982-June 1983
Using the technique of pulse radiolysis to generate O/sub 2//sup -/, the catalytic effect of copper 1,10 phenanthroline, ((op)/sub 2/Cu/sup 2 +/), on the dismutation of O/sub 2//sup -/ in aqueous solution was studied. The rate constants of the reduction of (op)/sub 2/Cu/sup 2 +/ and oxidation of (op)/sub 2/Cu/sup +/ by O/sub 2//sup -/ have been determined to be (1.93 +- 0.07) 10/sup 9/M/sup -1/s/sup -1/ and (2.95 +- 0.3) 10/sup 8/ M/sup -1/s/sup -1/, respectively. The turnover rate constant, k/sub cat/, has been calculated to be (5.1 +- 0.9) 10/sup 8/ M/sup -1/s/sup -1/. The reaction mechanism for the oxidation of (op)/sub 2/Cu/sup +/ by molecular oxygen in aqueous solutions has been investigated and the rate constant k/sub -10/ = (5.0 +- 0.3) 10/sup 4/ M/sup -1/s/sup -1/ has been determined. The rate constant of the oxidation of (op)/sub 2/Cu/sup +/ by H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ was measured to be k/sub 22/ = (937 +- 20) M/sup -1/s/sup -1/.
