Title: A horizontal cyrogenic bushing for the termination of an AC superconducting power transmission line

Conference · · Adv. Cryog. Eng.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6202534

Three combined voltage and current bushing were tested. Design considerations are described as well as the construcion. The axial section of the horizontal cryogenic bushing is illustrated. Performance is described in terms of test facilities, voltage test bushings, high current leads, and current. Tests found that vacuum leaks and refrigerator capacity have limited the helium density attained and prevented complete voltage tests while cold. The bushings attained satisfactory PDI and excellent impulse breakdown when tested warm in SF/sub 6/. The excessive collant flow required in the second of the three led to lengthening the temperature transition region in the third. The coolant flows required are 40% greater than expected. Possible cause is a radial curing void under the outer conductor which will be backfilled in the next bushing. The expoxy filler presently used results in a rather high thermal conductance, and a new formulation may be tried.
