Air must be considered as an important natural resource vital to the process of plant growth. The quality of the air, or the chemical composition of its minor constituents, varies as a result of the emissions of contaminants from all man's activities. Air quality, therefore, affects plant growth and development. A number of contaminants or pollutants alter plant metabolism and incite plant disease. The problem tends to become worse as urban communities enlarge and gradually merge with the once distinct surrounding rural agricultural areas. Some pollutants, by the very nature of their corrosive action, are also deleterious to a variety of materials. The objective of this presentation is to discuss some of the principal pollutants which adversely affect plant growth and to mention briefly some of those that degrade or corrode various materials.
