Title: Effect of added palladium on activity of CuO in oxidation of carbon monoxide and isotope exchange of oxygen and carbon monoxide. II. Isotope exchange of CO on CuO, Pd, and palladized cupric oxide

In the reaction of homomolecular isotope exchange of CO at temperatures from -78 to 375/sup 0/C, the activities of the following catalysts have been investigated: (I) CuO; (II) CuO + 0.05% Pd; (III) CuO + 0.1% Pd; (IV) CuO + 0.2% Pd; (V) CuO + 0.5% Pd; (VI) CuO + 1% Pd; (VII) Pd sponge. On specimen I, the reaction proceeds at considerably higher rates (K) and with lower activation energies (E) than on specimen VII. The introduction of Pd into CuO leads to a nonadditive increase in catalyst activity in comparison with that of cupric oxide (by a factor of approx. 2 to 4), the observed effects depending on the content of Pd in the samples and also on the dispersity of the Pd particles. Over the range of temperatures investigated, the maximum activity is shown by sample III, which has an average size of the Pd crystals of about 30 A. Possible mechanisms are discussed for isotope exchange in CO molecules in these catalysts and for the promoting effect of Pd on the activity of CuO.
