Infrared spectra of liquid and solid DT and T/sub 2/ a)

The fundamental vibration--rotation spectra of condensed DT and T/sub 2/ were measured. The 24 separate spectral lines identified consist mainly of Q/sub Q/, Q/sub R/, Q/sub Q/+S/sub o/(0), and Q/sub Q/+S/sub o/(1) transitions. The last two appear as triad sets in D/sub 2/--DT--T/sub 2/ solutions because of double transitions between different isotopes. The Q/sub Q/ frequencies are 2458 cm/sup -1/ for T/sub 2/ and 2736 cm/sup -1/ for DT. Some approximate kinetic half-times have been measured. In the 21 K liquid, these include: 18 h for the reaction of D/sub 2/+T/sub 2/..-->..2DT and 25 h for the T/sub 2/ rotational J=1 to J=0 conversion. In solid T/sub 2/ at 20 K, the J=1 to J=0 conversion time is also about one day, but it is only 1 h at 4 K. Catalysis by atomic tritium is considered to be the cause of the fast 4 K-conversion time.
