Indirectly, automobile dealerships reflect energy consumption and supply patterns because their products are the nation's largest users of petrochemical products. A dealership's economic condition depends critically on fuel availability and, to a lesser extent, on its price and this segment of the economy displays unusual sensitivity to national energy policy. The economic impact of the fuel shortage caused by the Arab oil embargo on automobile dealers is examined in three areas of business: new car sales, the used car resale market, and the service business and its relation to miles driven by the average car owner at lower speed limits.
