Electrochemically-enhanced electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry

The authors discuss here an investigation into the use of the electrochemical redox phenomenon inherent in the ES process and the incorporation of various electrochemical cells on-line with ES as means to form cations from neutral analytes in solution for analysis by ES-MS. The electrophoretic charge separation description of electrospray put forward by Kebarle and co-workers describes an ES sources as a two-electrode electrolysis cell. Based on this theory of operation, for the ES process to occur in positive ion mode an oxidation reaction must occur at the metal/solution interface within the ES needle, ultimately leading to electron flow to ground, to balance the positive-ion charge leaving the needle in the spray.
