North sea report. Activity grows in UK southern gas fields

Private operators are moving fast to develop the S. North Sea gas fields in which the British Gas Corp. held a monopoly until 1982. Development has become more attractive with gas prices rising from 6 to 8 pounds/therm to a range of 22 to 23 pounds/therm. The Eighth Round offshore licensing concluded in May 1983 further encouraged natural gas exploration and development. Out of 63 awards, 21 were for blocks in the gas-producing S. North Sea. Operators now have a chance of becoming active in exploring a long dormant area. Their only remaining complaint is that the recent offshore gas concessions exclude the southern gas fields - whether they discover gas or oil. The fields scheduled for development are described.
