Nitroarenes in general, and nitro-derivatives of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs) in particular, are probably the most important class of mutagens identified as air pollutants in the last decade. Their detection and analysis in air-particulates in the last decade. Their detection and analysis in air-particulates generally requires a preliminary step, where particulate extracts are fractionated by means of thin layer or liquid chromatography and/or HPLC, followed by electron capture gas chromatography (EC-GC) or gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The fractionation step is necessary, but often not sufficient, to reduce the chemical noise arising from the large variety of organics present in particulate extracts. These organics are generally at concentrations several order of magnitudes higher than nitro-PAHs and interfere with their detection. In the present work, a procedure for the determination of nitro-PAHs on crude air-particulate and soil extracts is introduced.
