New technology is under study for deepwater work
Outside the North Sea, most deepwater pipelines and those for harsh environments appear to be on hold. Discoveries in the deep Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, and Beaufort Sea are not yet at design stages. Atlantic prospects west of Ireland remain remote, and a second African link through the super-deep Straits of Gibraltar is a long way from happening. With the successful testing of a single-pass electron beam welding unit, the major technical hurdle of J-lay installation has probably been cleared when and if the industry looks to installation of a new super-deep line. But rather than planning major new lines in great depths, the real thrust is now towards improving the technology of multiphase transmission with the prime aim of cutting production costs in deeper water. The technology of Arctic pipelines is discussed.
