Direct Sampling Ion Trap Mass Spectrometry (DSITMS) has been under progressive development in this laboratory for several years as a technique for the rapid determination of targeted organic pollutants in a wide variety of environmental samples. This technology utilizes a specially designed modular sample introduction system which consists of a capillary restrictor interface, a real-time air monitoring inlet, a purge device for detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in discrete water and soil samples, and a thermal desorber for the analysis of VOCs and semivolatile organics collected on sorbent tubes. The authors have also recently developed inlet systems which permit the real-time continuous monitoring of volatile organics in aqueous process systems, in groundwater and surface water, and water saturated stack emissions. For the DSITMS methods, no chromatographic separation is performed prior to mass analysis.
